During the fourth year of the professional phase, you will participate in 10 one-month clinical rotations, each consisting of 40 hours per week (160 hours) for four weeks. Clinical rotations can take place at a variety of sites, including community pharmacies, hospitals, and ambulatory clinic practices as well as other nontraditional pharmacy settings, such as clinical work and basic research in the laboratory. A placement coordinator will work directly with you to help you find a placement close to your residence.

*Specific rotations are scheduled through the Experiential Education Office. You must complete 10 rotations during the 10 rotation blocks for a total of 40 credit hours of rotations by the end of the spring semester.

Minimum number of credit hours required for graduation = 139.

Experiential rotations allow you to demonstrate acquired knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a professional setting. You will complete 12 one-month experiential rotations of 160 hours each. You will complete two Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) before commencing a series of 10 Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) in the following areas:

  • 1 Community (IPPE)
  • 1 Institutional (IPPE)
  • 1 General Medicine
  • 1 Acute Care (In-Patient)
  • 1 Hospital/Health System
  • 1 Ambulatory Care
  • 2 Community Practice
  • 2 Patient Care Electives (In-Patient or Out-Patient)

Butler University’s Online PharmD program uses a cohort model with one start term per year in August.

Review the online PharmD admission requirements to determine if you are a qualified online PharmD candidate. You must have completed a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended. You must also be able to demonstrate successful completion of the nine math and science prerequisite courses listed on our admissions page. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply.

Pharmacy practice experiences let you put classroom theories into practice. In the summers following your first and second years, you will complete two Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences in community and institutional settings. Then during your fourth year, you will complete 10 one-month Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences. Through these 160-hour rotations (40 hours per week), you’ll gain experience in areas such as general medicine, acute care, ambulatory care, community practice, and a hospital system before completing two patient care electives and two elective rotations.

No, a student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

At this time, Butler’s Doctor of Pharmacy online pathway is not approved for VA benefits. Students cannot use the G.I. Bill for this program.

We know that students need real-world practice to become well-rounded professionals . That’s why we’ve built hands-on experiences into our online PharmD program. These learning opportunities include live debates, presentations, breakout group discussions, on-campus immersions, and in-person rotations.

On average, online PharmD students dedicate approximately 50 hours per week to class time and coursework. This is a full-time program that will be a mix of live class sessions held on Zoom, homework, readings, at-home labs, on-campus immersions, and in-person pharmacy practice experiences.
